Bacon Beer By Brooklyn Brewery Will Rule Them All

A heaping plate of bacon washed down with a frosty mug of beer is the perfect start to any day, but why can't scientists unite those two divine tastes into a single swallow? True, there is a German beer called Rauchbier, which means "smoked beer" and reportedly tastes like bacon, but it's not literally made with cured pig flesh. But at long last, Brooklyn Brewery brewmaster Garrett Oliver has heard the call of drunken gluttons and is developing a beer made with a special malt smoked in the same room with bacon made by "the legendary" Allan Benton. Oliver tells the Times, "It’s almost terrifying how much the malt smells like bacon." His ingenious plan involves infusing a brown ale with the flavor of Benton’s bacon fat through a technique known as "fat washing." The bacon-fat-infused ale is aged in bourbon barrels, and one historic day (t.b.d.) he will blend it with the bacon-smoked malt. And Oliver promises this to a world hushed with anticipation: "Either this will be the most amazingly disgusting thing you’ve ever tasted in your life. Or I shall rule the earth."

Beer-in-a-Box Coming This Fall

Get excited, America! Because as of this fall, you'll be able to consume cheap, watered-down swill out of a box. The future of beer consumption is now!

The $20, 1.5-gallon boxes of beer are designed for the paradoxical beer drinkers who prefer their beer to come from the tap but also don't care if said beer is actually good. They're currently testing boxes of Miller Lite and Coors Lite in a few cities and will expand it to nationwide this football season if all goes well.

And for those of you too lazy to do the math, 1.5 gallons is equal to 16 bottles. So you'll be paying $1.25 per bottle for your shit beer, which is more expensive than buying a 12-pack of bottles.

It's a common fact of life that many work-related conflicts can be solved over a drink. Thousands of secrets have been divulged under the tawdry yellow light of an Amstel Light promotional sign. Low-grade alcohol and smoke-stained pleather booths make for amazingly soothing corporate confessionals. In some dark and magical way, the siren's song of happy hour coaxes coworkers into revealing the real reasons they smite you in the workplace. Messy divorces, deaths in the family and financial turmoil - I've heard it all. If you can uncover the truth you might just be able to save your team. And if your team doesn't need saving, then happy hour is a great reason to get together with friends. In addition to the obvious bar finding tools like Yelp and Citysearch, below are a couple resources to help you enjoy your off-site work excursions:

1. Happy-Hour.com: This service allows users to search for bars via postal code. Listings including a full selection of happy hour specials and their hours. One unique feature of this service is that users can rate their favorite bars. For those of you who enjoy the hermit-like exclusivity of your favorite bar, you might want to ease off on the glowing review for fear of seeing your watering hole gain worldwide popularity.

2.Unthirsty: This site is a particularly useful geek site as it allows users to search for bars serving food and offering wifi access. 6.Coovents: There's something about those New Yorkers. Coovents is a happy hour mapping service with a Twitter feed and text messaging service. From half priced sangria in Nolita to $1 beer in the Burg, New Yorkers get the best deals on booze as they happen.

7. MyOrder: This service is outrageously obnoxious unless you're in one of those particularly crowded happy hours where you're at constant risk of losing your seat, or you just can't tear yourself away from a ball game or show. The application allows you to make your order directly from your phone without having to flag down a server. Keep in mind that if you're going to treat your wait staff like a beer bot, it's probably best to dish out some extra dinero for a tip.
